Edvard Munch
The Scream, 1893
pastel on cardboard
The biggest misconception about this painting is that the figure is the one screaming. The figure in fact is reacting to the scream, which is the scream of nature. In an excerpt from his diary, Munch described his inspiration for the piece:
"One evening I was walking along a path, the city was on one side and the fjord below. I felt tired and ill. I stopped and looked out over the fjord—the sun was setting, and the clouds turning blood red. I sensed a scream passing through nature; it seemed to me that I heard the scream. I painted this picture, painted the clouds as actual blood. The color shrieked. This became The Scream"

I got a job as a model today for the amazing John Kilroy! He’s amazingly talented and genuine and friendly. I’m so excited to work for him!

Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres
Grand Odalisque, 1814
o/c
This classical nude and essentially old timey porn. Before photoshop was photoshop, her spine has been made extra long and her hips twist in a way that is physically impossible. Ingres was criticized during his time for his romanticized ideal human figure.

A Bigger Splash
David Hockney, 1967
acrylic/c
This almost looks like a Mondrian with the sharp verticals and horizontals and primary colors. The splash and the unseen diver disturbs the harmony.

James Ensor
Christ’s Entry into Brussels, 1889
o/c
Not exhibited publicly until 1929, this disturbing crowd is ugly and debouched, ready to trample each other in the annual mardi gras parade. Meanwhile Christ (in the way back) is ignored, “an isolated visionary amidst the herd like masses of modern society.”

Usually paintings are meant to capture a moment in time but this is meant to capture several! So cute and whimsical.
